Dependable Hospice is seeking a compassionate, organized, and motivated Hospice Volunteer Coordinator to join our team in Tucson. This role is essential to the success of our volunteer program and plays a meaningful part in the overall care we provide to patients and families.

Position Summary

The Hospice Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, and supporting volunteers who provide companionship, emotional support, and practical assistance to hospice patients and their families. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to fostering meaningful human connection. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about service, comfortable working with individuals at end of life, and skilled at developing and maintaining positive relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach

  • Develop and implement strategies to attract qualified, compassionate volunteers from the community.

  • Represent Dependable Hospice at community events, fairs, schools, faith organizations, and partner agencies.

  • Maintain relationships with local organizations to expand volunteer engagement opportunities.

Volunteer Screening and Onboarding

  • Conduct volunteer interviews, background checks, and reference checks.

  • Coordinate orientation sessions that introduce volunteers to the philosophy of hospice, the needs of patients, and expectations for service.

  • Ensure volunteers meet all regulatory and organizational requirements prior to placement.

Training and Education

  • Provide comprehensive training using approved hospice training materials.

  • Offer ongoing educational opportunities, mentorship, and support to help volunteers feel confident and prepared.

  • Develop supplemental training modules as needed to enhance volunteer skills and comfort at the bedside.

Volunteer Coordination and Supervision

  • Match volunteers with patients and families based on skills, preferences, location, and care needs.

  • Maintain regular communication with volunteers to ensure positive experiences and timely feedback.

  • Monitor volunteer activity, assist with documentation, and ensure compliance with hospice regulations.

  • Provide emotional support and guidance to volunteers as they navigate the sensitive nature of hospice work.

Program Development and Administration

  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, reports, and schedules.

  • Track volunteer hours and contributions for compliance and recognition purposes.

  • Continually evaluate and improve the volunteer program to ensure it meets the evolving needs of patients, families, and the organization.

  • Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure volunteers are deployed effectively and safely.

Qualifications

  • Experience in hospice, volunteer management, social services, or a related field preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, patients, families, and staff.

  • Ability to work independently, plan ahead, and manage multiple tasks.

  • Comfort working with individuals facing serious illness, end-of-life issues, and emotional situations.

  • Knowledge of hospice philosophy and practices is beneficial.

  • Must meet all state and organizational requirements, including background checks and health screenings.
